BLACK LABEL
Discover Custance
In a world flooded with mass-produced furniture, Black Label by Custance Home and Furnishings stands apart. We believe a home should be an extension of its people—a sanctuary built not with what everyone else has, but with pieces that genuinely reflect who you are and the life you are building. Every project begins with an unhurried conversation where we explore how your family lives, how your spaces are used, and what emotions you want them to hold. Whether it is a lounge chair woven with traditional Danish cord or bedside cabinets showcasing a distinctive wood grain you love, we collaborate closely to turn your personal vision into an extraordinary reality.
The result is thoughtful design that carries deep meaning. These are not disposable objects; they are heirlooms in the making, built with traditional craftsmanship to be lived with, loved, and passed down. When friends and family gather, you will feel a quiet pride knowing that every piece tells a part of your story. Every detail, from the choice of timber to the final finish, is a reflection of your lifestyle and values. Black Label is where houses become homes, and where personal truth meets exceptional craft. Together, we get to do the work we love most: collaborating with you to create something truly unforgettable.

The Experience
We begin with an unhurried conversation to understand how you live and what your spaces should feel like. Together, we translate that vision into prototypes, selecting local solid woods and custom finishes. Then the real making begins in the workshop, where traditional craftsmanship meets thoughtful problem-solving. Finally, we deliver the finished work – bringing your vision to life.
-
We begin by listening.
Whether you’d like to visit our workshop in the Okanagan, join a relaxed video call, or simply share ideas through email – we meet you in the way that feels most comfortable.
Together we create a vision board, collecting images and inspirations that capture the feeling you’re hoping to bring into your home. We welcome your creativity and enjoy when the process becomes truly collaborative. Exploring ideas side by side often leads to the most personal and unexpected results.
As we talk, we take time to understand your lifestyle, your family, and how these pieces will live with you day to day. Our hope is that you feel deeply heard, genuinely excited, and understood. This is more than a conversation about furniture. It’s the beginning of a thoughtful experience where your unique character and the quiet fingerprint of your life shape everything that follows.
-
In the composition stage, we take the vision we’ve begun shaping together and start bringing it into focus. We refine the vision board, exploring materials, proportions, and details side by side until the direction feels clear.
We can visit our local timber merchant together or bring samples to you, discussing different species, grain patterns, and finishes so you can see and feel the options in person. Ideas evolve naturally through this process — we share concepts, listen to your thoughts, and let the design develop collaboratively.
Throughout these conversations we talk openly about how different choices affect the budget, allowing decisions to be made thoughtfully and incrementally. Before moving into full creation we present the refined direction for your approval and collect a deposit to begin the work. We can also build a small prototype when it helps you experience the scale and feel firsthand. Our hope is that you feel excited to be involved, confident that your vision is being shaped with care, and that something truly unique is beginning to emerge.
-
In the creation stage, the piece begins to take shape in the workshop. Working mostly alone and hands-on, we first build a prototype using simpler materials to test joints and refine the process. As the work progresses, we send regular photos and updates to keep you connected while focusing on careful craftsmanship — hand joinery, thoughtful finishing, and strong, beautiful connections.
Like any worthwhile project, there are natural ebbs and flows. When challenges arise that might affect the final result, we bring them to you and suggest alternatives. Bespoke work takes the time needed to achieve the quality we’re aiming for. Throughout this stage, we hope you feel trust and quiet excitement knowing your piece is being made with care in your community, and confidence that your vision is in good hands.
-
In the completion stage, we carefully prepare your piece for its journey home. For delivery in the Okanagan Valley and surrounding areas, we blanket-wrap the furniture and add foam protection to all corners. We do our best to keep delivery complimentary when close to the workshop, though a fee may apply for longer distances — we’ll discuss this based on your location and the size of the piece. You’re also welcome to pick it up from the studio.
For smaller pieces, we can arrange shipping across North America using the same careful protection. Larger items currently cannot be shipped across the continent. Whatever the option, we’ll work with you to find the arrangement that feels most comfortable and ensures your piece arrives safely.
